Outpatient Procedure Performed by Mercy Health Physician Sanjeev Bhatia, MD Can Postpone Need for Hip Replacement

(CINCINNATI; March 9, 2016) – Mercy Health – Cincinnati, which provides advanced, quality, compassionate care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that Orthopaedic specialist Sanjeev Bhatia, MD, performs ultrasound guided steroid injections that can postpone the need for a hip replacement.

“Many patients with knee and shoulder pain are familiar with steroid injections, which work temporarily to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief,” says Dr. Bhatia. “The injections have the same effect in painful, arthritic hips but the challenge is that hips are not as easily accessible as other joints. Thanks to ultrasound guidance available in my practice, I can inject the steroid during an outpatient visit, placing it precisely in the hip to help these patients find relief for up to six months. It also is helpful diagnostically because many of these patients have associated back problems that may also mimic hip pain.”

Patients with end stage arthritis can have the injections three times annually. Younger, athletic patients usually have only one injection due to the healthier state of their cartilage.

“For younger patients in particular, physical therapy in combination with the injections can temporarily offer relief in the hip until hip arthroscopy or replacement becomes necessary. It’s a safe and simple thing to do,” says Dr. Bhatia, who takes a conservative approach to preserving his patients’ hips. “Because an arthritic hip will continue to deteriorate, the injections won’t work forever but they can serve as a bridge from pain toward an eventual hip replacement.”

“There are instances where a patient’s pain has stemmed from overlying back or muscle issues,” adds Dr. Bhatia. “If the patient’s muscles are deconditioned and he or she is out of balance, the hip joint may not be source of the problem. In these cases, the injections are helpful diagnostically, since if they reduce pain, the problem is in the hip. If they don’t, it’s something else.”
