Structural heart disease includes a number of conditions that interrupt the natural blood flow through your heart’s valves and chambers. Our experienced team, led by Dr. Shawn Flynn, specializes in minimally invasive techniques and expertly delivers a comprehensive range of treatments. Our valve clinic coordinator answers questions and coordinates everything to assure smooth, efficient care.

Heart valve disease

More than five million Americans have heart valve disease, and many have no symptoms. If you suffer from aortic stenosis, you should know that Lourdes Hospital is the only hospital in the region to offer a new method of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement that helps our patients feel better and live longer.

Mercy Cardiology Associates and Lourdes Hospital streamline the process of diagnosing and treating heart disease. Specialists in diagnostic cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, structural heart, and cardiac surgery lead the center, providing all phases of care:

  • complete medical evaluation by heart specialists
  • state-of-the-art diagnostic valve disease education
  • the valve clinic coordinator and structural heart experts partner with your existing care team to develop a plan of care
  • partnerships with primary care physicians to provide timely updates
  • valve surgery, if necessary

Cardiac imaging

Lourdes Hospital offers the latest imaging technology. We can perform the following imaging services all in one visit:

  • cardiac CTA
  • interventional cardiology
  • nuclear imaging
  • stress test
  • 2-D/3-D transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)

Advanced treatment for valve disease

Mercy Cardiology Associates offers a multidisciplinary approach to the following procedures:

  • aortic valve repair/replacement
  • mitral valve repair/replacement
  • minimally invasive valve surgery
  • removal of cardiac tumors
  • surgical treatment of endocarditis
  • emerging catheter-based treatments
  • balloon aortic valvuloplasty

Minimally invasive procedures

Minimally invasive approaches are highly effective and reduce the impact created by open heart surgery. Patients typically experience immediate benefit from improved blood circulation. In addition, minimally invasive techniques typically allow patients to recover much more rapidly than with traditional open heart valve replacement. Techniques we offer include:

  • minimally invasive aortic surgery and mitral valve replacement
  • percutaneous ASD/PFO closures
  • transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • MitraClip (transcatheter mitral valve repair)
  • left atrial appendage exclusion (Lariat)/occlusion
  • alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • paravalular leak repair

TAVR

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an option for patients who have been diagnosed with severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis. Replacing the aortic valve through a catheter eliminates the need for open heart surgery.
