Program Overview

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. We began training internal medicine residents in 1967 and have a rich tradition of producing excellent internists. Our graduates are well-prepared for careers in traditional primary care and hospital medicine, as well as further sub-specialization through fellowship positions in cardiology, hematology/oncology, endocrinology, pulmonary-critical care, nephrology, infectious disease, gastroenterology and rheumatology.  We are very proud of the accomplishments of our residents, both during their training and later in their careers.

We celebrate our diversity where our program has been represented by both national and international residents from many countries across the world. We will continue to extend our search for enthusiastic candidates who honor our diversity and share in our mission to serve.  

We have an extremely dedicated and committed teaching faculty, robust scholarly activity and a supportive administration. Each year many of our residents present their clinical research or clinical vignettes at local, regional, national and even international meetings. Our program was awarded the Silver Medal for Research by the Ohio ACP (Annual Scientific Meeting) in 2015 and the Gold Medal in 2017, 2018 and 2019!

Our mission in training residents as part of our graduate medical education program is to:

  • Educate resident physicians to become proficient in the ACGME core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice.
  • Prepare resident physicians for the unsupervised independent practice of general internal medicine, hospital medicine and/or subspecialty fellowships. 
  • Provide education that prepares residents to consistently provide excellent care to their patients.
  • Deliver comprehensive, compassionate and safe patient care by faculty and residents to an inner city under-served adult population.  
  • Deliver comprehensive, compassionate and safe patient care by faculty members and residents to the community’s under-represented non-English speaking minorities. 
  • Manage patients with complex medical problems who require hospital admission under the supervision of faculty attending physicians.
  • Provide comprehensive ambulatory care experiences in the hospital’s ambulatory clinic, offices of practicing internists/sub-specialists, and geriatric facilities.
  • Provide a didactic program which covers a wide range of topics including general internal medicine, internal medicine subspecialties, monthly journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, CPC’s, complementary specialties, basic sciences and a variety of miscellaneous topics. 
  • Foster medical student education during core internal medicine clinical clerkship and third/fourth year electives in a team setting with resident supervision.
  • Encourage resident scholarly activity and develop the ability to teach, critically review the medical literature, prepare written and oral academic investigations, and become life-long learners.

Our residency program aims to foster a well-balanced residency education with:
