How to Apply - Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital

Thank you for your interest in the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital/NEOMED. Our 36-month ACGME-accredited program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Below is a comprehensive guide to our eligibility requirements, application timeline, and required materials.

1. Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for our fellowship program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Residency Training: Applicants must have completed (or be on track to complete) an ACGME, AOA, ACGME-I, RCPSC, or CFPC-accredited Internal Medicine residency program before the fellowship begins.
  • Board Eligibility: You must be board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine by the ABIM or AOBIM.
  • Competence Verification: We require formal verification of your level of competence, utilizing Milestones evaluations, provided by the director of your core residency program prior to appointment.
  • Licensure: Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Ohio.
  • International Medical Graduates (IMGs): Exceptionally qualified international graduates who trained outside the strictly approved programs may be considered if they hold a valid ECFMG certification, demonstrate clinical excellence, and meet specific ACGME "Fellow Eligibility Exception" criteria (such as specialized scholarship or leadership). Please verify current visa sponsorship capabilities directly with the program coordinator.

2. Application Timeline

  • July: ERAS opens for fellowship applications. We encourage applicants to submit their materials as early as possible.
  • August – October: Applications are reviewed by the program director and selection committee. Invitations for interviews will be sent out during this period.
  • Early December: NRMP Match results are released.

3. Required Application Materials

All application materials must be submitted through ERAS. A complete application package includes:

  • Completed ERAS Application & Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detail your training history, research experience, publications, quality improvement projects, teaching activities, leadership roles, and volunteer work.
  • Personal Statement: A clear, specific, and thoughtful essay explaining your interest in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Highlight your career goals, research or teaching interests, and any personal experiences that have shaped your professional growth.
  • Letters of Recommendation (3 required):
    • One letter must be from your Internal Medicine Residency Program Director.
    • The remaining letters should ideally come from Pulmonary or Critical Care attendings who have directly supervised you clinically, or from research mentors who know you well.
  • Standardized Test Scores: We require official transcripts for USMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3 are required) or COMLEX scores for osteopathic applicants.

4. Interview Process

A committee of core faculty reviews all applications and selects a limited number of individuals to invite for interviews. Invitations will be sent by email from our fellowship coordinator on a rolling basis. Interviews will be conducted via video conferencing. Timely submission of a complete application in ERAS is required.

Since Pulmonary/Critical Care is very competitive, hundreds of applications are anticipated for three fellows per year. The number of open positions may vary depending on the proportion of one- and two-year fellows in the program at any given time. Upon completion of interviews, the program fully participates in the Pulmonary Disease & Critical Care Fellowship Match as administered by NRMP.

Selected applicants will be invited for a personal visit at a selected time during the application process.
