Didactic Curriculum
The core of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is the approach to didactic and early surgical exposure. Didactics are accomplished with daily morning lectures. This daily approach to didactics has resulted in a 100 percent first-time board passage rate and performance on the annual Orthopedic In-Training Examination (OITE) of 97th and 100th percentile the last two years (including a historic percentage above the 90th percentile on average).
The PGY 1 year provides six months in the orthopedic services and rotations in plastic surgery, musculoskeletal radiology (MRI), trauma (general) surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, ICU medicine and vascular surgery.
Clinical services in the PGY 2-5 years of training include strong exposure to adult reconstruction, Level I trauma, foot and ankle, hand and upper extremity, shoulder and elbow, pediatric orthopedics, orthopedic oncology, spine, sports medicine and general orthopedics.
Additionally, an emphasis on early surgical exposure/operative experience is a hallmark of this program. Residents should expect hands-on supervised surgical exposure from day one of residency training, with rapid progression of autonomy based on skill level. Residents typically graduate with between 2,000 and 3,000 surgical cases that they have logged as completed.
