Frequently Asked Questions – Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at St. Vincent Medical Center

What are the advantages of working in a larger hospital system?

Working within a large hospital system allows for many different opportunities throughout the residency. This includes a variety of rotations with opportunities for electives at other sites throughout the health system as well as the ability to participate in system-wide drug policy development.

How are pharmacists perceived by the physicians and nursing staff?

Pharmacists play an integral role in the day to day management of critically ill patients. Physicians at all levels of training as well as the nursing staff seek out and rely on pharmacy for all optimal medication management.

Is there an opportunity as a PGY-1 resident to early commit to a PGY-2 program? 

Yes, this has been done previously and may be an option for candidates who are interested in critical care.

Can new learning experiences be created?

Residents may request a new/different elective learning experiences, if the resident expresses interest in an area that the residency program may not provide for adequate experiences based on preferences. Feasibility of accommodating such a request will be reviewed initially by the residency program director and then presented to the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) for further review and final approval.
