Mercy Health names Anton Decker president of Mercy Health Physicians

Cincinnati, OH (January 14, 2015) – Mercy Health has appointed Anton Decker as president of Mercy Health Physicians, the partner physician group practice associated with Ohio’s largest health system.

Dr. Decker will lead Mercy Health’s high-performing multi-specialty practice of nearly 1,300 providers. Mercy Health Physicians will be the engine for the health system’s population health strategies and the core of transformation efforts for care delivery in the communities it serves.

“Our partner physicians will play a critical leadership role as we extend our care network to more patients in more places, making lives better and making healthcare easier,” said Dr. Brent Asplin, chief clinical officer at Mercy Health. “Our goal is simple: To capture the expertise and capacity we need to improve patient outcomes and manage population health.”

Dr. Decker most recently served as chief medical officer and chairman of the board of Banner Medical Group, Banner Health’s employed medical group of more than 1,000 physicians, 350 advanced practice providers and 3,500 total employees, located across six states. He oversaw strategy, financial performance, clinical integration and engagement, innovation, regulatory compliance and quality outcomes.

Dr. Decker is a gastroenterologist and worked at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona where he was an Associate Professor of Medicine, the Mayo Clinic Arizona Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director, and the Director of the Pancreas Clinic. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and spoken at numerous national and international forums.

A native South African, Dr. Decker earned his medical degree at the University of Witwatersr and in Johannesburg, completed his residency and fellowship at Mayo Clinic, and then earned a master’s of Healthcare Administration at the University of Phoenix.  

He will start at Mercy Health March 1.
