Respected publication names Mercy Health leader to "CEOs to Know" list

(CINCINNATI; November 16, 2015) – Mercy Health, a Catholic Health Ministry serving Ohio and Kentucky, announces that Becker’s Hospital Review has named Mercy Health’s President and CEO Michael Connelly to its list of 130 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know, which features some of the most impressive presidents and CEOs in healthcare's nonprofit sector.

The men and women on this list lead some of the largest, most successful and prominent nonprofit healthcare organizations in the country. They have overseen financial turnarounds, shown commitment to their community through memberships and governance involvement with various organizations and helped advance the healthcare industry as a whole through their advocacy and professional efforts.

Since 1995, Connelly has served as president and CEO of Mercy Health, Ohio’s largest healthcare system. With more than 32,000 employees, Mercy Health is the fourth-largest employer in Ohio and a leader in quality and safety. Next year, Mercy Health will consolidate its home office and Cincinnati market offices in Bond Hill, helping lead new development in a revitalizing Cincinnati neighborhood. The system invests nearly $1 million a day to improve the communities it serves.

Connelly earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, cum laude, and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He earned his J.D. degree from DePaul University College of Law. Prior to joining Mercy Health, Connelly was regional executive/CEO, of Daughters of Charity National Health System-West in Los Altos Hills, California. He served as president and CEO of St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, a 495-bed teaching hospital. He also practiced law with the firm of Gardner, Carton and Douglas.

Connelly has served as the chair of the board for Premier, Inc., the largest quality data and GPO organization in the US, and has also been Chair of the National Catholic Health Association Board, the Catholic Medical Mission Board in New York and the 2013 United Way of Cincinnati Campaign – the fifth largest campaign in the United States. He has served as Vice Chair of Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Health West) in California, and on the Boards of St. Joseph Health System in California and Resurrection Health Care in Chicago. He is currently the Secretary of the Urban League Board of Greater Cincinnati and is on the St. Vincent DePaul Advisory Board. Mr. Connelly has earned numerous professional and academic awards and served on parish and community organizations.

Becker's Hospital Review has published a version of this list every year since 2012, and this is the third time the list has included 130 leaders.

Leaders were selected for this list based on editorial judgment and discretion. Nominations were also considered when making selections for this list.
