Mercy Health - Cincinnati Hospitals Celebrate Open Heart Surgery Milestones

(CINCINNATI; March 23, 2015) – Mercy Health – Cincinnati, which provides advanced, quality, compassionate care in your neighborhood, announces that Mercy Health – The Heart Institute is celebrating open heart surgery milestones at its East Side and the West Side hospitals.

Just as 2014 was coming to close, The Heart Institute at Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital marked its 1,000th open heart surgery and has now performed more than 1,030 open heart procedures. Anderson Hospital has offered open heart surgery since March 2006 and boasts two cardiovascular operating rooms staffed by a team of eight physicians and nurses. Earlier in the year, Truven Health Analytics named the hospital one of the nation’s Top 50 Heart Hospitals based on the quality care the team provides and the strong outcomes patients enjoy.

Early in the New Year, The Heart Institute at Mercy Health – West Hospital completed its 100th open heart surgery, just two months after the hospital celebrated its first full year in operation. The open heart surgery team has now performed more than 110 open heart surgeries at West Hospital. Mercy Health brought open heart surgery to the West Side for the first time when it opened West Hospital in November 2013. West Hospital has two cardiovascular operating rooms with the latest equipment and team that possesses over 70 years of open heart experience.

The Anderson and West Hospital programs have been under the direction of cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons Donald Buckley, MD and Manisha Patel, MD, respectively. Both are Mercy Health Physicians.

Surgeons perform open heart surgery to treat serious issues with a patient’s heart muscle, valves, arteries or other parts of the heart, such as the aorta. Open heart surgery is an important service for a hospital to provide when just a few seconds can mean the difference between a patient’s life and death.
